The promise of new flavours beckons from Banawe.
It’s been a year since we first tried making Dalgona coffee. Since then, many things have changed, but a few have remained the same. For the latter: We’re still stuck at home, and we’re still craving a pretty cup of coffee à la Starbucks.
In case your quarantine boredom hasn’t reached the level of DIY-ing everything, we’re here to break this exciting news for you: You can froth milk using your French press! Yes, contrary to popular budol belief, you do NOT need to splurge on an espresso machine.
Here’s how you can achieve your dream cup of coffee without breaking the bank.

Naturally, the French press is the most important item to have if you’re going to froth milk using this method. If you don’t have a French press yet, now is the time to get one! Don’t worry — it’s budget-friendly and practical; and if you’re an avid coffee drinker, this is definitely an essential! Shop for a French press here.
Generally, whole milk allows you to create a thick and creamy foam, which is why most baristas prefer this type of milk for frothing. If you prefer non-dairy milk, make sure you choose a brand made especially for frothing. See our full list of non-dairy barista-friendly milk here.
Because, obviously, you’ll need coffee to add your milk to (or you can also use hot chocolate… it’s your life, we won’t judge).
If you’re going for a cappuccino, go for espresso as your base. Without an espresso machine or a Moka pot, you can achieve the taste of espresso by boiling one cup of water with one to two teaspoons of instant coffee granules.
If you want a café au lait, simply brew strong coffee as your base. You can even use your French press for this!

Fill at least half of your French press with cold milk. Transfer it to a microwaveable mug or a saucepan. Heat for around 40 seconds.
Gently pour the heated milk into the French press. Attach the lid.
Froth the milk by raising and pressing the plunger rapidly for around 15 seconds. After you do this, the milk should rise, filling the French press with foam.
Pour or scoop the froth into your coffee. If the milk frothed successfully, the foam will stay on top of the drink. Add cinnamon or chocolate powder for extra oomph.
