When we think of air travel, long lines, lengthy flights, and distant destinations often come to mind. But in the Scottish Orkney Islands, there’s a flight so short, you’ll barely have time to settle into your seat. Operated by Loganair, the world’s shortest commercial flight connects the islands of Westray and Papa Westray in just 90 seconds—sometimes even less.

Covering a mere 2.7 kilometres, this unique flight is faster than the time many planes take to reach cruising altitude. In fact, the fastest recorded time for the journey is an impressive 53 seconds, achieved by pilot Stuart Linklater. On this short hop, passengers don’t have time to drink a coffee before touchdown, but they do get to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the stunning Orkney Islands.
The flight is a lifeline for the roughly 70 inhabitants of Papa Westray, many of whom rely on the service for essential travel like commuting to work or school. Doctors, students, and locals are frequent fliers, but in recent years, the flight has become a popular attraction for tourists eager to experience the novelty of this record-breaking journey.
Passengers board a Britten-Norman BN2B-26 Islander aircraft, a compact plane with just 10 seats. Those seated at the front get an up-close view of the cockpit, where they can watch the pilot in action as they glide over the water.
Despite its short duration, the flight is a scenic experience, offering travellers a glimpse of the rugged beauty of the Orkney Islands. From the window, you’ll see the windswept cliffs, rolling hills, and sandy beaches of Papa Westray, a destination known for its serene landscapes and simple way of life.
