The Intramuros Administration (IA) announced on Wednesday, 31 Jul 2019, that they will be relocating 500 informal settlers with IA’s ₱410 million budget. Currently, a total of 894 families are classified as informal settlers in Intramuros.
This new socialised housing program will involve the participation of the settling families by giving them the opportunity to choose where they would prefer to be relocated. According to IA Administrator Atty. Guiller Asido, “The first 174 families have visited two sites already. And because this is a socialized housing program, we, of course, have to consider their opinion in terms of the selection of the relocation site”.
Atty. Asido also added that they’re targetting to relocate the first 174 families by the first quarter of next year. The first batch is considering sites in Tanza and Silang, Cavite to be their new home. Other national housing agencies, such as the National Housing Authority, the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council, and the Manila City Hall, are also supporting this Intramuros initiative.
What makes this initiative even better is that it considers a livelihood plan for the relocating settlers. Asido stated that their goal is to relocate the families where they can continue to have jobs and earn an honest living. The whole project is set to be completed by 2023.
