Commuters in Metro Manila and Cavite have something exciting to look forward to this holiday season: the opening of the first phase of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension. Beginning 16 Nov 2024, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) will open five new stations, significantly expanding the LRT-1 line and making travel more efficient in some of the busiest parts of the city.
DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista recently announced that the new stops will extend LRT-1 service from Baclaran to key areas in Parañaque, giving residents and travellers alike greater access to transportation along this route. The new stations—Redemptorist, MIA (Manila International Airport), Asiaworld, Ninoy Aquino, and Dr. Santos—will offer quicker and more convenient access to prominent locations, especially beneficial for those visiting and commuting to and from Cavite.
The Cavite Extension, often called the South Extension Project, will ultimately bring the total number of LRT-1 stations from 20 to 28. Once fully completed, it will connect five stations in Parañaque City, one in Las Piñas, and two in Bacoor, Cavite. This expansion not only enhances public transit but also strategically places each station near significant city landmarks for added convenience.
The new MIA Station, for example, will be the closest stop to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), providing easy access for travellers. Asiaworld Station will link to the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), facilitating intermodal transport options for commuters heading further south. Additionally, Dr. Santos Station will feature a bus terminal, sports facility, and a connection to SM City Sucat, offering further convenience for shoppers and travellers in the area.
The LRT-1 Cavite Extension project began construction in 2019 and is divided into two phases. Phase 1, opening this November, covers five stations between Redemptorist and Dr. Santos. Phase 2 will add the remaining three stations from Las Piñas to Niog, completing the extension to a total length of 32.4 kilometres by the projected year of 2031.
When fully operational, the LRT-1 Cavite Extension is expected to cut travel time between Pasay and Cavite to 25–30 minutes, down from the current one hour and 30 minutes. The line is anticipated to serve approximately 800,000 passengers daily, making it a major improvement for public transportation in the region.
