If you have ever gone out for dinner or drinks around Ortigas, you have probably passed by Metrowalk, the lively spot along Meralco Avenue known for its bars, restaurants, and nightlife. Big changes are now happening in this well-loved area as part of the site is being cleared to make way for the Ortigas Station of the Metro Manila Subway Project. This massive development is expected to transform how people travel across the metro in the coming years.
According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), demolition work has already started on a portion of Metrowalk in Pasig City. This construction marks an important phase in the development of Ortigas Station, which will be one of the key stops of the Metro Manila Subway, the country’s first fully underground railway system. Once completed, the subway will connect Valenzuela City in the north to Pasay City in the south, helping reduce heavy traffic and providing faster and more convenient travel for commuters.

If you are wondering whether Metrowalk is disappearing completely, here is some relief. Only a section of the property is being affected by the demolition. The area being cleared sits at the corner facing Meralco Avenue, right beside the Meralco Building. The rest of Metrowalk remains open, so people can still visit their favourite bars, dine at familiar restaurants, or hang out with friends.
This project has been years in the making. In 2022, Luis “Chavit” Singson, who owns the property, gave his approval for a portion of the land to be acquired for the subway. With all permits and clearances now in place, the DOTr has moved forward with the demolition and preparation works that will make the Ortigas Station possible.
For thousands of residents and office workers who pass through Ortigas every day, this new subway stop promises to be a game-changer. Once operational, the Ortigas Station will make travel around the city faster, more comfortable, and more efficient. It will also help ease congestion on busy roads such as EDSA and Meralco Avenue.
The Metro Manila Subway Project is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Philippine history. When completed, it will include multiple stations that connect business districts, residential communities, and major transport hubs across the capital region. The project aims to shorten travel times between key cities, lessen dependence on road-based vehicles, and modernise Metro Manila’s public transport system.

Of course, with development comes some inconvenience. As the construction progresses, people can expect heavier traffic, temporary rerouting, and some disruption for nearby businesses. The government has assured the public that these changes are only temporary and that the long-term benefits will be worth it.
Metrowalk has long been part of Ortigas’ lifestyle and entertainment scene, but its transformation is also a reflection of how Metro Manila continues to grow and modernise. What was once a go-to nightlife hub will soon play a part in the country’s first underground railway system.
This change signals the city’s shift towards modern, sustainable, and connected living. So, the next time you find yourself passing by Meralco Avenue, take a moment to picture what is to come. The bars and restaurants you see today might soon share space with one of the metro’s most important transport hubs. Once the subway opens, we can finally look forward to shorter commutes and smoother rides, making city travel faster and more enjoyable than ever.
