For travellers passing through Manila, expect some traffic delays as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced a partial closure of Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard, set to last until January 2025. The westbound lane near the LRT-2 Pureza Station in Santa Mesa is under construction for a drainage rehabilitation project. Known for its traffic during rush hours, this area will see even more congestion as the project unfolds.

The drainage project, which started on 27 Sep 2024, is scheduled to be completed by 26 Jan 2025. The DPWH aims to fix a 214-metre section of the westbound lane and a 34.7-meter stretch on the eastbound side. This repair is crucial to address long-standing flooding problems in the area, especially during the rainy season. Flooding has been a recurring issue, with Typhoon Carina in July having caused water levels to rise by eight inches along Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard, prompting an urgent need for rehabilitation.
For the next four months, travellers and commuters can expect slow-moving traffic, particularly during peak hours. It’s important to plan your trips carefully if you’re heading to popular areas like Quiapo or Divisoria, as the construction is likely to cause significant delays.
The DPWH has provided several alternate routes to help ease the traffic burden. Motorists are advised to take M. Dela Fuente Street, Paltok Street, or Larizabal Street when travelling westbound toward Divisoria or Quiapo. These alternate paths should help reduce travel time and minimise the stress caused by the construction.
The drainage rehabilitation project is seen as a critical step in improving infrastructure in the area. Once completed, it is expected to mitigate flooding issues, making the boulevard safer and more accessible, especially during the rainy season. While the construction may be a temporary inconvenience, the long-term benefits will make the wait worthwhile.

Travellers passing through Santa Mesa are encouraged to stay updated on traffic conditions and adjust their routes accordingly. For now, patience and proper planning will be key to navigating through Manila’s bustling streets during this important infrastructure upgrade.
