Looking for a new place to spend the weekend in? Manila Zoo is finally open from 9am to 6pm daily! Here’s what you should know.
Known as the only public zoo in the city, Manila Zoo opened on 25 Jul 1959 under former city mayor Arsenio H. Lacson. Since then, the attraction has undergone several challenges and controversies until it was indefinitely closed on 23 Jan 2019, after being tagged as a major pollutant of Manila Bay.
Under the administration of then-Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Manila Zoo was rehabilitated in July 2020 with a ₱1.7 billion budget. Manila Zoo celebrated its soft launch in December 2021.
Today, Manila Zoo officially reopens to everyone. Home to over 550 animals, the area hosts 13 mammal species, 38 avian species, and 21 reptile species. Its main attraction is Ma’ali (Vishwama’ali), a female Asian elephant, and Kois the White Tiger, a male white Siberian tiger.
Professional veterinarians now monitor and maintain all animals and their habitats. Beyond animals, Manila Zoo also has a botanical garden where over 10,000 plants flourish.
