For many people, the quest to slow ageing often involves investing in skincare products, supplements, or sticking to intense workout routines. However, a recent study from Edith Cowan University (ECU), published in Science Daily, suggests that slowing down the ageing process could be as simple as packing your bags and travelling more.

The study reveals that travel not only boosts physical activity but also enhances mental stimulation and social interactions, all of which contribute to maintaining a low-entropy state in the body. This "low-entropy" state refers to the body’s ability to maintain internal balance and order, which is key in slowing the ageing process.
Lead researcher Fangli Hu explains that positive travel experiences can greatly improve physical and mental well-being by exposing individuals to new environments, encouraging physical activities, and promoting social interaction. Activities such as swimming, hiking, and exploring new places can help reduce stress levels, boost immune responses, and overall enhance health.
“Tourism isn’t just about leisure and recreation,” Hu said. “It could also contribute to people’s physical and mental health.” The study emphasises how travelling can help lower chronic stress levels, a known accelerant of the ageing process. Chronic tension can weaken the body's self-defence systems, leading to faster ageing, while travel helps reduce that stress and improve overall wellness.
While other anti-aging studies, like those from Mayo Clinic, focus on technical solutions like targeting “zombie cells,” this research provides a more holistic approach. By engaging in travel, individuals can actively support their body’s natural ability to slow the ageing process.
In addition to the physical and mental benefits, Hu suggests that travellers can boost the anti-aging effects by maintaining a healthy, balanced diet during their trips and taking skincare supplements. This combination of travel, physical activity, and proper nutrition can contribute to both looking and feeling younger.
