Surf spots in the Philippines are abuzz with good vibrations. Incredible waves, romantic sunsets, friendly locals — there’s little else you can ask for. Surrounded by bodies of water, the archipelago definitely has countless surf spots, many of which remain undiscovered. But thankfully, surfing has picked up across the country in recent years. As a result, you’ll find more thatched kiosks along coastlines, with vendors blasting reggae rock and selling Pale Pilsens like nobody’s business. This also means you can travel to a number of surf towns and expect other surfers in the lineup, as well as find surf lessons and board rentals for reasonable rates.

Best surf spots in the Philippines

Siargao

There are many reasons why Siargao is, arguably, the most popular surf spot in the Philippines. Its long reef breaks allow consistent waves for most of the year. Cloud 9 in General Luna, in particular, is a tube mecca, producing beautiful barrels perfect for advanced surfers.

Not only does Siargao get strong swells from the Pacific Ocean, but it also has a wonderful lineup of restaurants and cafes. While boutique hotels dot this teardrop-shaped island, you can also find plenty of budget-friendly Airbnb homes near the surf spots. In General Luna, check out the Triangle Sister House, the Bamboo House, or the Luxury Oceanfront Pool Villa.

Baler holds the pride of being the birthplace of Philippine surfing. After the filming crew of the 1979 film Apocalypse Now left the surf town, locals picked up the sport and began the first wave of surfing in the country. Now, it remains one of the most popular surf spots in the Philippines. Sabang Beach is especially known for its endless beach breaks that satisfy beginner to advanced surfers alike.

A laidback town, Baler does not accommodate as many luxury establishments as Siargao and La Union. But, its culture certainly has its charm. Cool restaurants and hipster cafes have popped up lately, as well as eco-friendly Airbnbs like the Bamboo VillaCasa De Julio, and Balerfornia Huts.

La Union

A gem in Nothern Luzon, San Juan, La Union was once a sleepy town until it transformed into a surfer’s haven. Compared to other surf spots in the Philippines, San Juan has the advantage of smallness; nearly all hotels, restaurants, and establishments are within walking distance from one another, mostly sprawled across the coastline, too. The downside is San Juan can get crowded pretty fast, and parking spaces are scarce and usually expensive.

Make sure to book your accommodation as soon as possible, then. Check out Casa Ellyse, a beachfront property that holds beach cleanups every morning. Villa Aurora has a pool of its own and is great for groups; meanwhile, Alon and Sandy is a budget-friendly option for barkada travellers.

Danielle Uy

If Disney were creative enough to let Mulan and Melody procreate, Danielle would be that child. From an early age, she has dreamt of becoming a purposeful revolutionary... and an unruly mermaid. While Danielle hasn't held a sword in her lifetime, she feels powerful enough with her byline. Her creative energy is fueled by many things: the quiet right before the rest of the world wakes up, the orange sky as the sun rises during an uncrowded morning surf, the beautiful bitter taste of black coffee, and the threatening reminder of a pending deadline.
