Actress Nadine Lustre and her boyfriend Christophe Bariou are once again in the spotlight after being dragged into talks about environmental destruction in Siargao. But here’s what’s really happening: they were never part of the reef destruction issue. Instead, they are the ones calling out alleged corruption linked to a controversial bridge project on the island.

Photos of coral reefs being flattened by a backhoe in Tuason Beach, General Luna recently spread online. Locals were angry, blaming a construction project for damaging the reef. But as the story circulated, some netizens mistakenly tied it to Nadine and Christophe, who both live in Siargao and are known for their support of sustainability.
The reef destruction and the couple’s issue are completely unrelated.

The real issue: a bridge and alleged corruption
Christophe recently revealed that he and Nadine were targeted in an alleged 50 million peso extortion attempt involving people linked to the Union–Malinao Bridge project. The five-kilometre bridge aims to connect several barangays but has been criticised by residents for possible displacement and damage to the environment.
According to Christophe, individuals claiming to represent certain politicians approached them before the elections, offering to settle the bridge issue in exchange for cash or political support.
“Nadine’s answer was firm: We don’t make deals with corruption, ever,” Christophe shared.
After rejecting the offer, Christophe said his businesses faced harassment from local officials, including surprise inspections, delayed permits, and unauthorised soil testing. He filed complaints with the Anti-Red Tape Authority, which ruled in his favour, and has taken legal action to expose what he described as long-time corruption on the island.
“Corruption and political greed have been eating away at Siargao for decades,” he said.

Both Nadine and Christophe have been consistent in promoting sustainable living in Siargao. In September, they also criticised the construction of a luxury villa that reportedly destroyed coral reefs, which may have caused people to wrongly associate them with that issue.
The couple are long-time supporters of protecting Siargao’s environment and community. Christophe has lived on the island for over a decade, while Nadine continues to promote eco-friendly tourism and responsible travel.
The controversy shows how easily misinformation spreads online, especially when it involves celebrities. It also raises bigger questions about how “development” affects places like Siargao, where natural beauty is its main treasure.
If you’re planning to visit Siargao, choose reef-safe activities, eco-friendly stays, and local tours that help protect the island’s charm. Because in Siargao, paradise should stay natural.
